DEMOS FROM THE ARCHIVES:
Love Songs for No One
(scroll to listen)
Welcome to my demo recording universe: whistles and background noise, recording distortion, and a bit of over-singing from before I learned to wield my vocal instrument properly (the last two I would sing very differently now). This is where it all starts, before the songs go through the process of becoming public-ready.
But my heart is there, and you get access to more of this little, imperfect inner world I rarely share!
Inspired by the angst I felt at the fleeting nature of most popular love songs about relationships which almost universally devolved into nothing or worse, I decided early on in my songwriting career to not write love songs for anyone in particular, until I would know it would be for something -- someone -- lasting.
These are a few of those demos from over the years, intentionally with no one specific in mind with a view to the absolute particularity of real love, now here for you.

Pulled from a dream and an instinct, wherein a persistent whistling chimney features prominently in the third verse:
From a mid-day reverie, and the original guitar was very pretty but I can't remember how to play it now and couldn't find the original demo, so a wistful humming version:
Written, I remember, on the edge of my bed while the Saskatchewan thick winter wind howled, and the whistling chimney continued - and so much distortion on the recording!
After another mild broken heart, in a basement in the Canadian Kootenays, the lyrics typed madly into my phone notes before I fell asleep in the most comfortable bed I can remember:
As always, you are welcome to share any of these songs or this page with a friend, colleague, or family member; please just consider encouraging them to join us here as a member so I can continue to create and share as I do.
Love is Slow lyrics:
I am veiled and unseen, like roots in the ground
Bursting with life, in silence, earthbound
I am hidden beneath the trembling skies
All green within me, threatening to die
Love is slow in its coming: do not stir it up
Before I can cut the dull, salty earth
So hard not to hammer the slow-coming birth
Patience and patience and patience I breathe
Try to keep growing through dying, old seeds
Love is slow in its coming: drink the desert cup
Waiting for breakthrough, ready to break
All of this labor for love seeming late
But I know it's coming: the wind and the rain,
The sun on my shoulders, the warmth on my face
Love is slow in its coming: but love never comes late
But hidden for now in the tombs of the earth
The light and the fire and the life that it's worth
My heart in the roots, my chest in the veins
Stretching in darkness to burst into flame
Love is slow in its coming: it triumphs the wait
And, yes, I will love you when time runs ahead
And all in a moment, I'll bloom blood red
And the red will be bolder from draining of roots
And all will have been for to some day love you
All will have been for to some day love you
Love is slow in its coming: love triumphs the wait
Love is slow in its coming
It triumphs the wait
Love is slow in its coming
